Do It Yourself (DIY) Volunteering

DIY Volunteering allows families and groups of all ages and sizes to participate in community service from the comfort of their own homes.  It provides a means to engage in volunteering in a non-traditional way. DIY Volunteering offers the necessary tools to become connected with our community in a familiar place and at a convenient time. You can even make a social activity out of it.

HandsOn offers two types of DIY projects:
Organize It Yourself and Featured DIY

Organize It Yourself are projects you can coordinate and host on your own, without HandsOn’s involvement. They do not require you to express interest and there are no deadlines.  We offer suggestions and guidelines, but you take the responsibility for finding a home or a need for the materials created or service done. Each project will have a few community partner suggestions to contact.  Organize It Yourself projects allow families or groups flexibility, freedom, and fun!

The Featured DIY will change monthly. These projects will be coordinated and/or hosted by HandsOn. We’ve already done the research and ensured that our partner organizations are on board by expressing an immediate need for the materials, product, or service you are DIYing. Featured DIY offers the chance to do something on your own, OR alongside HandsOn staff and other volunteers.  You’ll express interest in the project to let us know you will participate.

You may meet new people or learn a new skill, but you will definitely impact some part of our local community.

Each DIY project will contain these components:

Issue area: the community need we’re addressing
Beneficiary: those who will benefit from the project
Purpose: the reason to be addressing the issue
Supply list: the materials needed
How to do it: step-by-step project instructions
Reflection: ways to think about and discuss the impact of the project
What’s next? what can be done to continue your involvement in this area

In the end, we hope that all DIY projects will offer another approach to get involved in service, spark a new or continued interest in volunteerism, or a desire to volunteer directly with HandsOn or our community partners.
