Halloween Decorating Party

The mission of Virginia Supportive Housing is to end homelessness by providing permanent affordable rental housing and support services to those most at risk of dying on the streets. South Richmond Studio Apartments provides housing and support services for 60 formerly homeless adults. The population served at this location is primarily older, very low-income, medically vulnerable, and for the most part the tenants do not have the support of local family or relatives. They commonly suffer from loneliness, isolation, and chronic depression as well as physical disabilities and other mental health disorders.

Volunteers often provide the only source of social interaction and emotional support available to them, especially during the holidays. Holidays like Halloween provide an opportunity for volunteers to decorate the community room, share baked goods, listen to music, and enjoy some light-hearted fellowship with the tenants.

This activity is MOST suitable for family and youth volunteers. It is not primarily designed to accommodate single adults.

Volunteers will:
  • Create or hang a variety of hand-made and commercial Halloween decorations
  • Paint clay Halloween ornaments and small pumpkins
  • Bake cookies
  • Engage in conversation and help celebrate the holiday with tenants
Volunteers are invited to bring additional art supplies, baked treats, donations of non-perishable food items (peanut butter, tuna, canned vegetables, canned soups, etc) for needy building tenants.

Volunteers are welcome to dress in costume provided: 1. costumes are not sexually suggestive; 2. costumes are not too gory or violent for young volunteers; 3. faces are not covered by masks; 4. costumes do not involve any plastic weapons; 5. costumes are sensitive to our population (i.e. "homeless person" costume would not be sensitive). Costumes are not mandatory.

Volunteers are welcome to park anywhere in the parking lot adjacent to the building. This is an indoor project and will still take place in the event of rain.

All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered
, either as an individual, or via the team functionality. This includes youth. To learn more about our Team Functionality, please view our Volunteer with a Group page.

If allowed on the project, any youth volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a parent-signed youth waiver to the project.
The waiver can be found after sign up on the confirmation page or by visiting our Volunteer with Youth page.
The opportunity date and time you are looking for is no longer available.
