Fun at the Farmlet

William Byrd Community House is a social services organization that assists children, families and individuals receive the help they need to move forward in life. We have a small urban production farm (Byrd House Farmlet) of herbs and vegetables on our property. We use all volunteer labor. All the produce from the Farmlet goes to our on-site food pantry where it is distributed to needy individuals and families twice-weekly. The food pantry is one program of our Family Support and Emergency Services department. These services are a core part of our mission to transform lives and build self-sufficiency.

Volunteers will:
  • Harvest produce and bag and refrigerate appropriate items
  • Prepare new planting beds and plant late season crops
  • Weed, mulch, water, and compost
  • Rake leaves, pick up debris, and sweep sidewalks
Volunteers should wear layered clothing appropriate for weather outdoor work and bring rain gear.  Shoes must be sturdy and closed toed. Work/hiking boots, trail type outdoor shoes, old tennis shoes, duck shoes, or faux Wellies are acceptable. No flip-flops or other sandals. Teva or Keen type shoes not recommended but acceptable if they are closed toe.

GPS directions will take you to our Community Garden facing Idlewood. Parking is available on Linden Street off Idlewood or in our parking lot at the end of the alley off Idlewood. Street parking also available on Idlewood and on Cherry Street in front of our building. Meet us out back on the playground by the gym.

In the case of inclement weather, we will work indoors in our main building. Tasks will include vacuuming and steam cleaning carpets, general cleaning, and some library tasks.

All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered

If allowed on the project, any youth volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a parent-signed youth waiver to the project.
