Dreams & Visions Party

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 20, 2014, The Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday is a National Day of Service, and a time to re-commit ourselves to serving each other and our communities. On MLK Day, Americans across the country will honor Dr. King by helping their neighbors and communities. This Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. King's life and teachings into community service that helps solve problems.

MLK Day programs meet tangible needs, but also build a sense of community and mutual responsibility by spurring conversation. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through volunteering and unite to strengthen communities, empower individuals, and bridge barriers.

Volunteers, alongside Virginia Supportive Housing clients and United Methodist Family Services foster care youth volunteers, will engage in reflective and interactive activities.  The exercises are designed to explore the past and present strengths and challenges in order to establish goal based action plans for 2014. In the culminating activity, participants will create a 2014 Dreams & Visions collage or photo cube using images cut from magazines.

The mission of VSH is to end homelessness by providing permanent housing and support services. Activities that engage clients in opportunities for social interaction with community volunteers allow them to benefit from other perspectives, renew their sense of hope and optimism, and help to refocus their attention on realistic ways that they can influence their own future actions in constructive ways.

Volunteers are asked to wear casual appropriate dress and closed toe shoes.
Volunteers will be provided with parking pass after checking in.

All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered. This includes youth. If the post indicates adults must be present, youth and adults must register using the team functionality. To learn more about our team functionality, please view our Volunteer with a Group page.

If allowed on the project, any youth volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a parent-signed youth waiver to the project.
The waiver can be found after sign up on the confirmation page or by visiting our Volunteer with Youth page.
