Growing Our Yard
William Byrd Community House provides high quality educational, developmental and nutritional programs to children in the City of Richmond so they are academically, socially and emotionally prepared to succeed in school and in life. WBCH wants their front yard and entrance to reflect how they want their kids to feel: smart, strong, self-confident. There are two large planting areas, two small planting areas, a natural habitat area and potted plants in the front space. Volunteers will add compost/organic matter to the soil, plant new trees and shrubs that are adapted to the light conditions and then add mulch to protect and sustain the soil and plantings. Plants will be selected for specific qualities (i.e. attracting butterflies, unusual shapes or colors or other observable characteristics) so they can also be used as a teaching tool for their children – a living classroom.
Volunteers will:
All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered, either as an individual, or via the team functionality. This includes youth. If a project requires an adult to be present, youth MUST register as a part of a team. To learn more about our Team Functionality, please view our Volunteer with a Group page.
If allowed on the project, any youth volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a parent-signed youth waiver to the project. The waiver can be found after sign up on the confirmation page or by visiting our Volunteer with Youth page.
Volunteers will:
- plant, weed, and mulch trees and flowers
- rake leaves and sweep sidewalks
- till large tree-well areas and/or loosen dirt
- add compost and organic matter into soil, remove shrubs
- clean up on side and back preschool playground areas
- steam clean indoor rugs in children's program areas and offices
- wipe down tables, chairs, and surfaces in children’s classroom and play areas
