Grow These Gardens

The mission of Renew Richmond is to empower individuals across all walks of life to cultivate healthier lifestyles through the growth of food, nutrition instruction and agricultural education. They hope projects like these will become models for progressive urban sustainability efforts in the City of Richmond and provide fresh, healthy, locally-grown fruit, vegetables and flowers to those individuals who have little to no access.

HandsOn volunteers will be doing various garden tasks like watering, planting, weeding, harvesting, composting, and building structures each month and will rotate to support the following 3 garden locations:

G.H. Reid Elementary Garden: This public school is located in an inner-city “food desert” with limited access to healthy nutrient dense food.

Jerusalem Connection Garden: A neighboring Jewish community center requested assistance to create this urban farm. Sale of value-added products and charitable donation of the produce to community organizations will enable Renew Richmond to successfully provide more than 4000 lbs of food a year and financially sustain itself.

Swansboro Baptist Church:  fresh vegetables grown at the Jerusalem Connection Garden site are used in their community food pantry. This site has raised beds for church and community members and is used as an learning garden for George Wythe High School's science and entrepreneurship classes.

Wear clothing appropriate for gardening and brush, which may include long pants, closed toe shoes, bringing garden gloves and water (and any garden tools you don't mind lending for the day), and wearing a hat, bug spray, and sunscreen.

All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered, either as an individual, or via the team functionality. This includes youth. To learn more about our Team Functionality, please view our Volunteer with a Group page.

If allowed on the project, any youth volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a parent-signed youth waiver to the project.
The waiver can be found after sign up on the confirmation page or by visiting our Volunteer with Youth page.
