Schoolyard Farms - Lucille Brown MS

Community Food Collaborative’s mission is to transform community health, wealth, and vitality by re-imagining our relationships to food and farming. In working towards their mission, CFC focuses on 3 key determinants of community health: environmental stewardship, economic development, and food and nutrition access. CFC teaches the principles and practice of these three complex issues through a network of schoolyard farms and educational programs that engage residents of all ages.

In addition to being used as an outdoor classroom, the schoolyard farm also serves as a venue for the Grow On! program, an 8-month youth internship experience that uses urban agriculture and social entrepreneurship to cultivate critical life skills for middle school students including financial literacy, cooking and food preservation, critical thinking, and food and nutrition literacy. All of the food grown is sold as part of the Grow On! program at weekly youth-run community farm stands and CSA program.

Volunteers will assist with a variety of tasks, including: planting seasonal vegetables, maintaining and weeding garden beds and footpaths, pruning and trellising plants, keeping compost piles active and healthy, and harvesting produce and flowers. Most importantly, you can expect to have a lot of fun while working and learning.

Volunteers should dress for comfort and safety. Wear close-toed shoes, long pants and sleeves as appropriate, and sunscreen.

All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered. This includes youth. If the post indicates adults must be present, youth and adults must register using the team functionality. To learn more about our team functionality, please view our Volunteer with a Group page.

If allowed on the project, any youth volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a parent-signed youth waiver to the project. The waiver can be found after sign up on the confirmation page or by visiting our Volunteer with Youth page.

Registration for this project will close 12 hours in advance.
