Grocery Distribution for Senior Residents

Our Program: Better Housing Coalition (BHC) houses over 900 low-income seniors across our 8 age-restricted properties across Richmond and Petersburg. We participate in the GRAIN program, a collaboration with Feed More and other area partners, that brings fresh food directly into communities at no cost to participants; with the average average income of BHC's senior residents just under $15,000, this program key to providing much needed budget relief and healthy options to those who have limited mobility. The food is delivered to our Market Square community in North Chesterfield and distributed directly to seniors. Food items include shelf-stable foods such as canned and dry goods, as well as frozen meats, some refrigerated items, and an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Volunteers: Volunteers will help receive the food delivery, set up the distribution, pack bags of food to deliver seniors who are physically unable to come to the food distribution, and then helping clean-up after all of the groceries have been distributed. Volunteers may also engage in brief socialization with the seniors when they distribute the food, as many of our participants enjoy chatting with new people they meet. Volunteers should be able to lift 20-30 lbs. If volunteers have a little more time available, they will assist a staff member in delivering the food directly to approximately 15-20 senior citizens that are unable to physically come to the distribution on their own. Volunteers would assist recipients by unpacking the food from bags and setting on counters and/or in the refrigerator or freezer, if the recipient is in need of that level of assistance. The role of the volunteer is comparable to an “in-house” Meals on Wheels volunteer.

Attire: Please wear comfortable shoes and casual clothing that you don't mind getting dust or spills on due to the handling of food products and boxes.
