Volunteer with a Group

Attending projects with friends, coworkers, or other civic groups is possible. Sign up together by using our team functionality.

You can create a volunteer team with all the people you want to volunteer together. Instructions on how to create and manage a team are shown in this video. You can create public teams (anyone registered with the site can join) or private teams (only people you've added and invited can join).

Team captains can sign up different members of their team for different projects, but remember--captains are responsible for ensuring members attend. Please ensure the person on your team is able to attend before you sign up and hold a slot for them (making it unavailable for others).

Please note: simply creating a team doesn't mean you've registered them for any projects. You will need to go the page of the actual project you wish to register members for and follow step 5 below.

Once you've registered for a project, if you remove yourself, you cannot register for that same project again. So be sure to only sign up once as a team if you plan to register that way. If you sign up as an invidual first, you will not be able to then sign up for that same project as a team.

Note: Internet Explorer is not always compatible with our site. If you experience anything unusual, you will need to use a browser like Firefox or Chrome instead.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Step 1: Register for an account with the site
To sign up for any projects on our site: HandsOn Managed or Agency referrals, you must first be registered with this site. Click Register to create an account or Login at the top right of the page if you already have an account.

Step 2: Create a team
After you've completed the registration process, visit the My Account section of our site, and follow the Create a New Team link on the left of the page. Enter in your team name, description, privacy, affiliation (if applicable), and your team member's names, email addresses, phone numbers and ages.
Each person must have either:
1) a unique email address OR
2) phone number (phone number does NOT need to be unique)
3) age must be included if the team member is a minor

It's best to include an email address for all team members, so that they can verify their team membership, and create their own individual account within our system so that they can receive confirmation emails, reminders from the system, and have their hours tallied. If a team captain does not include an email, then that volunteer cannot receive communication through the site and the team captain will be responsible for getting the project information to them.

Step 3: Assign roles
Assign the members who will be team captains, who will oversee the team's coordination and participation. It is best not to have more than 1-2 captains. Please note that if you are adding children to your team that are under the age of 13 you must use a parent or guardian's phone number for their contact information. Under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act we are unable to create unique accounts with email addresses for children under the age of 13.

Step 4: Find Volunteer Opportunities
Use our search feature or browse our Project Calendar to find a project that has the appropriate number of spaces and age requirements available for your team. You can sign up some or all members of your team for each project you are interested in.

Step 5: Express Interest/Sign Up As a Team
At the bottom of the project screen, click this button to indicate you will be signing up as a member of a particular team (and not just as an individual). Depending upon the type of project you select, you will be given the choice at the opportunity to:
Express Interest As a Team: This is a referral, and the community organization is managing this project directly or it is an ongoing need. After clicking, the next page will let you choose which members of your team you plan to serve with. Once you submit, this will notify the agency contact of your interest and they will contact you to schedule you to serve.

Sign Up As a Team:  Usually this is a HandsOn managed project or a special event (unless otherwise noted in the description). After clicking, the next page will let you choose which members you want to sign up. Each will be automatically signed up for that project and will receive a confirmation e-mail containing all of the information you will need. Be sure to only sign up members of your team who have confirmed they will attend the project.

HOW TO MODIFY OR REMOVE YOUR TEAM OR ITS MEMBERS

As the team captain you will be able to modify your team by logging in, and visiting the My Account section of our site.

Under Upcoming Opportunities you will see the projects your team is signed up for. If a person will no longer be able to attend, they need to login to their account and remove themselves, or the team captain should remove them, thus allowing that slot for another volunteer.

To remove members from a particular project, click on Manage My Team under the Action/Status category. De-select members of your team that will not be able to participate, and click "Submit" when you are done.

You cannot edit personal information about the individual team members such as phone or email--only they can do that since you've created accounts for them in our system.
