Creating Street Art in RVA

In its seventh year, Arts in the Alley takes rundown city streets and alleys and turns them into bright outdoor art galleries by painting murals. While they have many talented artists who help, YOU don’t have to be an artist to participate – much of the work is priming and paint by numbers! Murals make a neighborhood more fun, safer, and bring art outside the walls of galleries. Volunteers see first-hand a portion of the transformative process of community redevelopment through art.

In this weekend, volunteers will bring color and design to Brookland Park Boulevard at a new coffee shop and bike repair shop opening soon, with a goal to serve the community, increase local engagement, employment, and provide a non-profit business for events in the North Central Richmond area.

This project is painting the outside of a building which has been unoccupied and in disrepair for many years.  Volunteers will be cleaning, prepping, and priming walls, and helping paint a mural.

Youth volunteers are welcome but there must be as many adults as children under 12 in each group.  Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty or paint-splattered. Bring sunscreen, water, a snack, and lunch if you'd like if you plan to stay through lunchtime. This project will happen rain or shine. Much can be done even in the rain, so don't let a little drizzle keep you away!

All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered, either as an individual, or via the team functionality. This includes youth. To learn more about our Team Functionality, please view our Volunteer with a Group page.

If allowed on the project, any youth volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a parent-signed youth waiver to the project.
The waiver can be found after sign up on the confirmation page or by visiting our Volunteer with Youth page.

Registration for this project will close 12 hours in advance.
