Making History: Transcribe Volunteer Leader Needed

HandsOn is recruiting a Volunteer Leader specifically for recurring project we have with The Library of Virginia.

Our Volunteer Leader program consists of a group of dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers who we train to lead projects in the community, exponentially increasing the reach of volunteerism in our region! You can make a difference every month by exploring a community need and leading others in service, all while learning new skills, getting access to special professional development opportunities, and interacting with fellow leaders in meetups and socials year round.

The project is once per month, on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 - 7:30 pm, and you'd commit from April 2017 - April 2018, with the option to renew your term if you'd like at the end!

The project is this:
The Library of Virginia acquires, preserves, and promotes access to unique collections of Virginia’s history and culture. With more content and research moving online, they seek to make digital documents as accessible as possible by crowd-sourcing this massive historical project. Crowd-sourcing empowers communities to make their own history and you can be a part of it.

Volunteers will transcribe handwritten pages by reading the written text and typing it into digital form. They will also review other transcriptions for accuracy. Those with an editing eye can eventually learn to be an advanced editor. Participate in enhancing access to collections of over 400 years of Virginia history, people, and culture. From peace to wartime, court records to letters home, and conspiracies to political statements, there will be something for everyone. These include documents from the Civil War, African American narratives, and Depression-era WPA (Works Progress Administration) Life Histories. Help us tell the narrative of all Virginians – the famous, infamous and even anonymous – and join us in Making History.
