Schoolyard Farms Volunteer Leader Needed

HandsOn is recruiting 2 Volunteer Leaders specifically for recurring projects we have with the Community Food Collaborative for a June 2017 start.

Our Volunteer Leader program consists of a group of dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers who we train to lead projects in the community with our partners for one year, exponentially increasing the reach of volunteerism in our region! You can make a difference by exploring a community need and leading others in service, all while learning new skills, getting access to special professional development opportunities, and interacting with fellow leaders in meetups and socials year round.

The project is leading the first Saturday of each month from 9am-12pm. Your Volunteer Leader term would be from June 2017 - June 2018 with the option to renew your term if you'd like at the end.

The project:
Community Food Collaborative’s (CFC) mission is to transform community health, wealth, and vitality by reimagining our relationships to food and farming. In working towards our mission CFC focuses on 3 key determinants of community health: environmental stewardship, economic development, and food and nutrition access. We teach the principles and practice of these three complex issues through a network of schoolyard farms and educational programs that engage residents of all ages. In addition to being used as an outdoor classroom, the schoolyard farm also serves as a venue for our Grow On! program, an 8-month youth internship experience that uses urban agriculture and social entrepreneurship to cultivate critical life skills for middle school students including financial literacy, cooking and food preservation,  critical thinking, and food and nutrition literacy. All of the food we grow is sold as part of the Grow On! program at our weekly youth run community farm stands and CSA program.

Volunteers will assist with a variety of tasks, including: planting seasonal vegetables, maintaining and weeding garden beds and footpaths, pruning and trellising plants, keeping compost piles active and healthy, and harvesting produce and flowers. Most importantly, you can expect to have a lot of fun while working and learning.

If you would like to become a HandsOn Volunteer Leader and lead this project:
