Opportunity Details

Red Door Ministry Clothing Closet Volunteer

Red Door Ministries

Since the early 1980’s Grace and Holy Trinity Church has been serving the hungry, homeless, food and housing insecure community of Richmond.  Started by the women of the congregation as a Soup Kitchen in recent years we have expanded to a ministry of Healing, Hospitality and Wholeness.  We strive to care for the whole person in body, mind and spirit to the best of our ability.  We do this by providing a well-balanced meal under the supervision of our Kitchen Coordinator; a clothing closet filled with donations from the parish, individuals, and community organizations coordinated by our Social Work Intern; a healing service lead by our clergy; and our prescription assistance program.

Each week we invite people to participate in the cooking, serving, and cleaning up of the meal.  We also invite local performers to entertain guests weekly usually musicians, but this is not exclusive.

We encourage volunteers to walk or take public transportation since our location at 8 N Laurel Street has limited parking.  However there is a small parking lot in the alleyway of the church off of Cherry street next to the Altria Theatre.  If there is no parking there we encourage volunteers to park in the paid VCU lot on Laurel and Main and walk to the church, rather than parking on the street because when you are working you may not be able to feed the meter on the street.

Please dress appropriately for kitchen work, no loose fitting garments, sleeves, and closed toed shoes.  Aprons will be provided if you would like to wear one.

In case of inclement weather or other closings you will be notified via Hands on RVA, if you have any questions you can look us up on Facebook at Red Door RVA, or call the church at 804-359-5628.

The clothing closet shift begins at 11:30 with volunteer lunch, if you do not plan to join us for the volunteer meal you can start the shift at 12 noon.  Closet workers should be prepared to help sort, fold and set up the clothing closet under our Social Work Intern’s supervision and then to distribute clothing to the community between 1:15 pm and 2 pm.
