The Library of Virginia acquires, preserves, and promotes access to unique collections of Virginia’s history and culture. With more content and research moving online, they seek to make digital documents as accessible as possible by crowd-sourcing this massive historical project. Crowd-sourcing empowers communities to make their own history and you can be a part of it.
Volunteers will transcribe handwritten pages by reading the written text and typing it into digital form. They will also review other transcriptions for accuracy. Those with an editing eye can eventually learn to be an advanced editor. Participate in enhancing access to collections of over 400 years of Virginia history, people, and culture. From peace to wartime, court records to letters home, and conspiracies to political statements, there will be something for everyone. Help us tell the narrative of all Virginians – the famous, infamous and even anonymous – and join us in Making History.
Please express interest for this volunteer activity. You will then be registered for an account on the Making History: Transcribe website (www.virginiamemory.com/transcribe). Once you log in, you can complete volunteer transcription independently from home, your local library, or anywhere with a computer and internet. Your volunteer time will begin when you log in and hit "Save transcription;" Your session ends the last time you hit "Save transcription." Please save frequently to demonstrate continued activity and to prevent lost work.
