One Richmond, One Book Volunteer Orientation

Thank you for your interest and your commitment to help serve the children of Richmond Public Schools! The One Richmond, One Book program is a three-week, community-wide literacy program. Elementary students, along with their family, educators, and community members, will read one featured title together. 


The Fall 2020 One Richmond, One Book program will run from October 5th to October 23rd. All opportunities will be social distance friendly with most occurring virtually!

 

This is a required Volunteer Orientation for all NEW Volunteers. REPEAT Volunteers are required to attend a separate orientation. For the safety of the children and in compliance with RPS mandates, every new volunteer will complete a background check and volunteer agreement at Orientation.

 

There are 4 dates you can choose from to attend Volunteer Orientation. Please be sure to choose the date you want at the bottom of this opportunity when you sign up:

Tuesday, September 8th - 5:30-7pm 

Wednesday, September 16th- 5:30-6:15pm

Saturday, September 19th- 10-10:45am 

Thursday, September 24th- 5:30-6:45pm 

 

Registration will close 24 hours before the orientation time.

 

Volunteers are needed in the five roles listed below. Discussions of the needs and commitments involved with each role will take place at orientation.

  • Book Deliverer - Will assist with the distribution of books around the city

  • Letter Vetter - Will pick up, vet, and send letters for the pen pal activity

  • Activity Leader - Will lead book-themed activities using Google Hangout

  • Group Reader - Will read a chapter or two of the featured title to a group of students through Google Hangout 

  • One-on-One Reader - Will be a virtual reading buddy to assist struggling readers  

 

Volunteer Orientation will take place via Zoom. All those who are signed up will receive the Zoom link 24 hours in advance.
