VIRTUAL - East End & Evergreen Cemetery Research

Help us reconnect families in our community!

Historic East End & Evergreen Cemetery is the resting place for some of Richmond's most notable residents. Evergreen Cemetery is a historic African-American cemetery, created in 1891 and located in Richmond's East End. It is the resting place for many of Richmond’s African-American leaders of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Maggie L. Walker, John Mitchell, Jr., and Rev. J. Andrew Bowler. East End was established in 1987 and is the resting place for luminaries such as Hezekiah F. Jonathan, Rosa D. Bowser, Dr. Richard F. Tancil and William Custalo. There are thousands of burials in East End & Evergreen, most of which have become overgrown after over 40 years of neglect.

Remote volunteer assistance is needed. Volunteers will record information about fraternal, religious, and work organizations from various sources such as findagrave.com and headstone photos. Volunteers will research the organization given to them and record any information found into a spreadsheet.

Found some history that interests you? Write about it! Volunteers will also have the opportunity to write a short research paper and/or a Fact sheet about the researched organization.

Please register for this remote opportunity. Your contribution to this project will have an immediate impact on the lives of people who are connected to East End & Evergreen. Once you register, you will receive information to hlep lead you during your volunteer opportunity.
