Park Day 2021
When you are volunteering, please follow these tips for healthy volunteering. HandsOn Greater Richmond emphasizes the importance of wearing a mask, social distancing, and not volunteering if you don't feel well.
Objective: American Battlefield Trust’s Park Day is an annual, nationwide event focused on preserving and maintaining our nation’s heritage. Help us preserve the natural beauty of Gaines’ Mill Battlefield by working to remove debris left by the site’s previous owner. Abandoned dumps and fences can prove hazardous to native wildlife and spoil the historic battlefield landscape.
Activity: We will be cleaning up agricultural debris and dumpsites in the woods, and loading the trash into a truck to be properly disposed of.
Supplies: We will have wire cutters and work gloves available but encourage volunteers to bring their own if possible. Please wear protective clothing (long sleeves, pants) to avoid contact with poison ivy, as well as sturdy shoes suitable for walking on uneven ground. Finally, be sure to bring plenty of water to drink!
COVID Considerations: We will be working outside at a spacing of more than 6 feet between participants. Face coverings are required on federal land when a spacing of 6 feet cannot be maintained – please bring one so we can gather at the beginning and end of the event. Hand sanitizer will be available. Each shift is limited to 10 participants (including staff) in accordance with NPS coronavirus regulations.
