Garden Maintenance at Shelton House
When you are volunteering, please follow these tips for healthy volunteering. HandsOn Greater Richmond emphasizes the importance of wearing a mask, social distancing, and not volunteering if you don't feel well.
Objective: Maintain garden areas and decorative shrubs around the Shelton House.
Activity: There are several different tasks that need to be taken care of in this area. First, many of the shrubs around the House have small trees and vines growing through them which need to be removed. Second, there is a patch of vines and briars near the House which blocks its view of the neighboring field – this area needs to be clear-cut. Third, there are some patches of invasives (privet and honeysuckle) which need to be removed from around the garden.
Supplies: We will have loppers, hand saws, and work gloves available but encourage volunteers to bring their own if possible. Please wear protective clothing (long sleeves and long pants) to avoid contact with poison ivy – there is lots in this area! Click here for tips on identifying poison ivy before it leafs out. Remember – “fuzzy vine is no friend of mine”. Finally, be sure to bring plenty of water to drink!
COVID Considerations: We will be working outside at a spacing of more than 6 feet between participants. Masks are required on federal land when a spacing of 6 feet cannot be maintained – please bring one so we can work close together if necessary. Hand sanitizer will be available. This event is limited to 10 participants (including staff) in accordance with NPS coronavirus regulations.
