DIY Volunteer Opportunity - Cold Weather Kits

Organizational Beneficiary: Richmond Behavioral Health Authority

IMPACT: Many of the individuals and families we serve at RBHA do not have the resources to prepare for the cold months to come. Cold weather items are needed for both children and adults. Priority for distribution will be to individuals experiencing homelessness.

Every year for GIVING TUESDAY (and throughout the year), RBHFoundation works to collect new, cold weather items for individuals in need who receive services from RBHA. RBHA serves nearly 13,000 individuals – children and adults – every year. This DIY Volunteer Opportunity will help us increase the number of people we can help by providing needed cold weather items for those who cannot afford to purchase items on their own.

The mission of Richmond Behavioral Health is to promote health, wellness, and recovery for the individuals and communities we serve. We envision an inclusive, healthy community where individuals are inspired to reach their highest potential.

Supplies

  • Five 1-gallon ziploc bags
  • New gloves (available at dollar stores)
  • New hats (available at dollar stores)
  • New socks (men’s or women’s or children’s)
  • Five notecards (handmade)

Step One:

  • Purchase and/or collect your supplies. We ask DIY volunteers to donate a minimum of 5 cold weather kits and 5 encouraging notes. Contributions over the minimum amount are welcomed, but we will not be able to document more than 3 service hours for any DIY project.

Step Two:

  • Place one of each item in each of the ziploc bags. Write an encouraging message on a notecard to include in each bag. Please designate on bag if for a man, woman, or child.

Step Three:

  • Drop off your project at RBHA on December 1, 2020 – GIVING TUESDAY – 10am – 3pm.
  • We are located at 107 S. 5th Street, Richmond, VA 23219. We will be set up outside to receive donations. CONTACTLESS DROP OFF!!
  • 3 additional dates and times are available for drop off as well:

Thursday, October 8, 2020 11am – 2pm

Friday, November 6, 2020 11am – 2pm

Thursday, November 19, 2020 11am – 2pm

Step Four:

  • Sharing your time and resources is a great gift to others. We hope that through your giving, you receive something beneficial in return – the feeling of doing good for someone in need and knowing you have had a direct, positive impact in someone’s life. Talking through the purpose of the project as you complete it is a great way for all involved to gain a connection to those being served through your generosity. Here are some questions to help guide conversation:
    • How will this project help someone in need?
    • What do we know about the importance of building a community made to help each other?
    • Did our feelings about the recipients of this project change as we completed the project?
    • What worked well about this project?
    • What else can we do now? Are there other ways we can help?

Step Five:
