REMOTE: Write Encouraging "Sunshine Notes" to Low-Income Senior Residents
When you are volunteering, please follow these tips for healthy volunteering. HandsOn Greater Richmond emphasizes the importance of wearing a mask, social distancing, and not volunteering if you don't feel well.
Your Impact:
This creative and remote volunteer opportunity is great for individuals and groups looking to help the elderly in our community. We are asking volunteers to write encouraging notes to Better Housing Coalition’s (BHC) senior residents to help combat isolation by spreading care and kindness throughout our affordable housing communities.
Isolation is a serious detriment to the health of seniors. According to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, social isolation can be as bad for health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day! Property managers and community social work staff regularly engage with residents, but this highly social group of residents is suffering from the negative effects of social isolation caused by the pandemic. BHC’s 9 income restricted communities are home to over 900 seniors with an average income of nearly $15,000 and average age is 70.5 years old.
How to Participate:
Volunteers will make or purchase cards and write an encouraging note. We’re calling them "sunshine notes" because we plan to distribute them the first week of spring. It's easy to help out! Just follow the steps below.
- Express interest in this volunteer activity
- Get/make your cards – as many as you’d like!
- Write your note(s)
- Mail your completed cards to BHC’s HQ no later than March 12th
Better Housing Coalition
Attn: Sunshine Cards
23 W Broad St, Ste 100

Once received BHC staff will collect and distribute your cards to our seniors during the first week of Spring, and you can feel great that you helped our seniors combat isolation!
