Urban Forestry - Street Tree Planting - Mosby

Street trees are an important, yet often overlooked, aspect of our streetscapes. They help create healthier, safer, and more connected communities. From cleaning our air, to filtering our water, and even slowing down storm surge and flooding in our cities, trees also provide shade that can cool our neighborhoods by up to 10 degrees, which can help prevent heat-related deaths and illessess in urban areas that suffer from heat island effect. The City of Richmond’s Urban Forestry Division maintains over 120,000 trees that are within public right-of-way spaces.

Join Urban Forestry for a street tree planting! We will be planting street trees in treelawns along Spotsylvania St in the Mosby neighborhood. Not only will this help beautify the area and create habitat for birds and other local wildlife, but once reaching maturaty, these trees will create shade and cool down temperatures in an area that has a high Heat Vulnerability Index.

Volutneers will be assisting staff from Urban Forestry, in the planting of new street trees in treelawns. Duties will include digging holes, moving and amending soil, placing and planting 10 trees, applying mulch, and watering. We will be planting 15-gallon/1.5" caliper sized trees, which are larger in size, but will create an imediate impact to the area.
Volunteers may want to bring along a refillable water bottle and snack, as well as sunscreen, if needed.
