Plant a Rain Garden

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is partnered with Miles J. Jones Elementary School to plant a Rain Garden at the school. A Rain Garden is an environmentally friendly garden that is planted with all native plants to help improve rain and water runoff. Rain Gardens help protect water quality in nearby creeks, streams, and rivers because they absorb polluted runoff and provide a buffer that naturally infiltrates and cleans rainwater, recharging groundwater supply, before it enters drainage systems. Volunteers will be planting 8 dogwood trees, 3 river birch trees, and 20 square feet of switch grass to improve the rain and water runoff around the school. The Rain Garden will also provide the school with an educational component that will allow students to learn about the environment, plant growth, and nature. The Alliance's mission is to bring together individuals, organizations, businesses, and governments to find collaborative solutions, to build a strong commitment to stewardship, and to deliver innovative, broadly-supported programs that benefit the land, waters, and residents of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Volunteers will:
  • Dig holes for 8 dogwood trees, 3 river birches, and 20 sq. ft. of native grasses
  • Plant trees, bushes and other native grasses
  • Mulch and water plants as they are placed in the soil

Volunteers may park in the school parking lot. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear close-toed shoes, preferably sneakers or boots.

This project will still occur if there is rain. If there is extreme weather, volunteers will be notified in advance that the project may be canceled.
