Brace the Cold (Frame)!

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 20, 2014, The Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday is a National Day of Service, and a time to re-commit ourselves to serving each other and our communities. On MLK Day, Americans across the country will honor Dr. King by helping their neighbors and communities. This Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. King's life and teachings into community service that helps solve problems.

MLK Day programs meet tangible needs, but also build a sense of community and mutual responsibility by spurring conversation. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through volunteering and unite to strengthen communities, empower individuals, and bridge barriers.

Volunteers will be building cold frames and moving growing materials into new growing spaces including raised beds.

The cold frames will allow Tricycle Gardens to plant and grow additional cold weather crops to support our Get Fresh! Program.

The Get Fresh! Healthy Corner Store Initiative, modeled after the national Healthy Corner Stores Initiative, will increase community access to fresh, affordable, locally grown produce through neighborhood corner stores in Richmond, VA.

Tricycle Gardens is partnering with the Richmond City Health District, Bon Secours and the Get Fresh! Task Force to help corner store owners implement the program and to provide nutrition education to families in their communities to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. In 2014, Tricycle Gardens will work to strengthen our current corner store partnerships and expand to new corner stores.

Volunteers should dress appropriate and be prepared to work outdoors on a functioning farm.
Street parking is available along Bainbridge and 9th Street.

All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered. This includes youth. If the post indicates adults must be present, youth and adults must register using the team functionality. To learn more about our team functionality, please view our Volunteer with a Group page.
