Scanning History
The mission of the Richmond Public Library is to inform, enrich, and empower Richmond's residents, expanding opportunities for all citizens by promoting reading and the active use of cultural, intellectual, and information resources through a dedication to excellence and professional service.
The Library has a large paper-only file of Richmond history, filled with information from the Richmond Times Dispatch, churches, pamphlets, brochures, and local commemorative events. These items date from the early 20th Century and are likely the only copies available of much of the material. Currently, there is no system in place to access or search these documents, and certainly not online.
Their goal is to preserve, digitize, index and organize these resources and make them accessible online. How exciting to be able to see and participate with this special local Richmond History collection!
Volunteers will be organizing, entering data, and indexing to provide a searchable listing of documents. Volunteers may also scan and digitize these items. Join them and have fun discovering and sharing in local history. Volunteers may also assist with other library cataloging, collections, and other needs.
All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered, either as an individual, or via the team functionality. This includes youth.

Any youth volunteers under the age of 18 must bring a parent-signed youth waiver. The waiver can be found after sign up on the confirmation page or by visiting our Volunteer with Youth page.
Registration for this project will close 12 hours in advance.
