Unload/Load Fair Trade Rugs
Ten Thousand Villages is a non-profit, fair trade retailer. The store in Richmond opened in 1995. The mission of Ten Thousand Villages is to create opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to our markets through long-term, fair trading relationships. This will be the second year we’re partnering with Bunyaad to host our rug event. Bunyaad is a fair trade organization that sells handmade oriental rugs from Pakistan. Through the sales of the rugs, the artisans are able to provide needed infrastructure to their villages; primarily schools. Approximately 700-800 families make the rugs, some of which take years to create. The rug sales also assure that this rich heritage of rug making is preserved. Bunyaad receives 75% of the profits from the rug sales. The remainder of the sales profits go to the Richmond store which enables us to continue to provide fair trade products to our area. Volunteers will help unload the rugs on 3/13 and set-up in the store. Most can be carried by 1 person; the larger will require 2 folks. On 3/18 volunteers will roll up the rugs for loading in the van. Parking is on the street. Wear comfortable shoes.
