Read-Aloud Teacher for Low-Income Children (Volunteer)
*This opportunity requires a commitment of two visits a month for at least six months.
Want to create meaningful change in the lives of children?
61% of low-income kids live with no children's books in their homes. The average child growing up in a middle class family has been exposed to 1,700 hours of read-alouds while children growing up in low-income families have only been exposed to 25 hours. Love of Learning Read Aloud Teacher volunteers work to combat these statistics for Central Virginia's underserved children.
Volunteers read-aloud to kids in large and small groups and then lead a fun activity or read one-on-one with children. At the end of each visit, kids choose a brand-new children's book to keep to build their at-home libraries. Sessions last for about one hour.
Volunteers visit their assigned site twice a month (unless the volunteer would like to read aloud more often). Volunteers choose their assigned site from locations across Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, & Hanover. Head volunteers are asked to transport a book bin. (Volunteers must pass a background check paid for by the volunteer. The cost of the background check is $19.00. Love of Learning will send you the link upon request.)
Age Minimum (with Adult): 16+, Minimum Age:18+
