Opportunity Details

Academic Mentor for Middle School Students (Once per week, 5:10-6:10pm)

A recent study by the U.S. Department of Education found that minority students comprise 42% of public school students, but only 28% of enrichment program participants. As we all know, race and socioeconomic status do not create a gap in giftedness or talent. The gap is in the opportunity.
Higher Achievement Richmond is an educational non-profit working to close this opportunity gap during the critical middle school years. We’re currently seeking volunteer mentors to commit to one hour, once a week, from October through May. Mentors are paired with small groups of 5th-8th graders, and work through either STEM or Humanities curriculum.

Who: Those who believe that opportunities matter. You don't need to have any prior teaching experience to be a mentor. Mentors receive significant support from Higher Achievement, including curricula, extensive orientation, on-site support, and regular training.

What: Teach a small group of 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th graders in STEM or Humanities. Since we provide significant "training wheels" with our detailed curriculum and on-site staff, you can focus more on having fun and building lasing relationships!

When: One night a week from 5:10-6:10pm on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Our program runs from October-May.

Where: We have achievement centers at 3 local middle schools: Binford, Boushall, and Henderson.

How to get started:

1. Complete an online application

2. Our staff will follow-up to schedule a brief informational phone interview.

3. Complete a quick background check form sent to you by e-mail.

4. Complete online training.

The opportunity date and time you are looking for is no longer available.
