Group Volunteer Opportunity- Senior Citizen Activity Kits

About Our Program:

Did you know that research by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine has found that social isolation can be as bad for health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day?!

BHC houses over 900 seniors in 9 income restricted communities. Our seniors have an average income of nearly $15,000 and the average age is 70.5 years old. Property managers and community social work staff regularly engage with residents, but this highly social group of residents is suffering from the negative effects of social isolation caused by the pandemic.

We are looking for volunteers to source and assemble activity kits for BHC's senior residents. Engaging puzzles and activities such as word searches and coloring pages can help residents to work their brains and sharpen their dexterity. These packages can help stimulate conversations between neighbors as they check on each other with phone calls, get their mail, or walk down the hall. Activity kits are one small way of engaging residents’ minds and boosting spirits during this challenging time.

How You'll Help:

This fun and remote volunteer opportunity is great for groups looking to help the elderly in our community. Groups will "adopt" a BHC community to create kits for all the residents living there; we have communities of all sizes, and we'll pair you with one that meets your team's needs. We have provided volunteers with a suggested list of contents below, but you will have flexibility to shop and assemble the kits as you would like. We aren’t accepting individual kit donations at this time as BHC offices remain closed.

Is your group interested in participating? It's easy to help out! Just follow the steps below.

  1. Express interest in this volunteer activity
  2. BHC will pair you with a BHC community based on how many kits you would like to provide
  3. Buy the supplies on the lists below
  4. Stuff the bags
  5. Schedule a drop off your filled kits with BHC’s volunteer coordinator
  6. Feel great that you helped an entire senior community combat isolation!
