Invasive Plant Removal at Malvern Hill Battlefield
When you are volunteering, please follow these tips for healthy volunteering. HandsOn Greater Richmond emphasizes the importance of wearing a mask, social distancing, and not volunteering if you don't feel well.
Objective: Remove invasive plants from the trails at Malvern Hill.
Activity: We’ll be clipping invasive honeysuckle and privet, then spraying with herbicide (the cut stump method). We’ll be focusing on the climbing honeysuckle plants, taller than waist height – smaller, ground-cover type honeysuckle can be treated by park staff with foliar herbicide. More information about these plants can be found here.
Supplies: We will have loppers and work gloves available but encourage volunteers to bring their own if possible. Consider wearing protective clothing (long sleeves and pants) to avoid contact with poison ivy: click here for tips on identifying poison ivy. Finally, be sure to bring plenty of water to drink!
COVID Considerations: We will be working outside at a spacing of more than 6 feet between participants. Masks are required on federal land when a spacing of 6 feet cannot be maintained – please bring one so we can work close together if necessary. Hand sanitizer will be available. This event is limited to 10 participants (including staff) in accordance with NPS coronavirus regulations.
Age Minimum (with Adult): 13+, Minimum Age:18+, Court Ordered Volunteer - Allowed
