Urban Forestry - Tree Inventory Updates

When you are volunteering, please follow these tips for healthy volunteering. HandsOn Greater Richmond emphasizes the importance of following CDC guidance.

Brief Organizational Description:

Street trees are an important, yet often overlooked, aspect of our streetscapes. They help create healthier, safer, and more connected communities. From cleaning our air, to filtering our water, and even slowing down storm surge and flooding in our cities, trees also provide shade that can cool our neighborhoods by up to 10 degrees, which can help prevent heat-related deaths and illessess in urban areas that suffer from heat island effect. The City of Richmond’s Urban Forestry Division maintains over 120,000 trees that are within public right-of-way spaces. They are one of our most important assets that we track in our inventory.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

Join us for a 1.5-2hr exploration of the neighborhoods of Richmond! We will be identifying street trees, taking measurements, and noting vacant planting spaces, to help update our inventory. No special skills or prior experience necessary, starting locations and routes will vary and will be communicated upon sign-up. Each route will be an approx. 1 mile long loop on sidewalks; some bending and stooping may be required. So bring a water bottle and a snack, lace up your shoes, and let's go look at some trees!

PLEASE NOTE:
Registration for all volunteer opportunites will be CLOSED 12 hours prior to start time, to allow for proper planning. Please be sure to check your email and spam folder for your confirmation emails, which include details on meeting location! Responding to that email will help us ensure the minimum number voluenteers needed to hold the event.
