Earth Day 2022 - Street Tree Planting w/Urban Forestry

When you are volunteering, please follow these tips for healthy volunteering. HandsOn Greater Richmond emphasizes the importance of following CDC guidance.

Brief Organizational Description:

Street trees are an important, yet often overlooked, aspect of our streetscapes. They help create healthier, safer, and more connected communities. From cleaning our air, to filtering our water, and even slowing down storm surge and flooding in our cities, trees also provide shade that can cool our neighborhoods by up to 10 degrees, which can help prevent heat-related deaths and illessess in urban areas that suffer from heat island effect. The City of Richmond’s Urban Forestry Division maintains over 120,000 trees that are within public right-of-way spaces.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Join Urban Forestry for an Earth Day tree planting! We will be planting street trees in tree wells along Jefferson Avenue in the Union Hill neighborhood.

Volutneers will be assisting staff from Urban Forestry, in the planting of new street trees in tree wells. Duties will include helping to dig holes, moving soil and mulch, and placing and planting these 15-gallon/1" caliper sized trees.
