When you are volunteering, please follow these tips for healthy volunteering. HandsOn Greater Richmond emphasizes the importance of following CDC guidance.

Brief Organizational Description:

Street trees are an important, yet often overlooked, aspect of our streetscapes. They help create healthier, safer, and more connected communities. From cleaning our air, to filtering our water, and even slowing down storm surge and flooding in our cities, trees also provide shade that can cool our neighborhoods by up to 10 degrees, which can help prevent heat-related deaths and illessess in urban areas that suffer from heat island effect. The City of Richmond’s Urban Forestry Division maintains over 120,000 trees that are within public right-of-way spaces.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Join Urban Forestry for a street tree planting! We will be planting street trees in treelawns along Decatur St. in the Broad Rock/Swansboro neighborhood on Southside. Not only will this help beautify the area and create habitat for birds and other local wildlife, but once reaching maturaty, these trees will create shade and cool down temperatures in an area that has a high Heat Vulnerability Index.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volutneers will be assisting staff from Urban Forestry, in the planting of new street trees in treelawns. Duties will include helping to dig holes, moving soil and mulch, and placing and planting these 15-gallon/1" caliper sized trees. We will also be installing tree irrigation bags for watering these trees after planting. All activities will be outdoors, so please dress appropriatly in something you don’t mind getting dirty, as well as sturdy closed-toe shoes. All tools will be provided, but feel free to bring along your favorite work/gardening gloves.
