ArborDayRVA 2022 - VCU Sustainability - Amelia Street School Meadow Prep

When you are volunteering, please follow these tips for healthy volunteering. HandsOn Greater Richmond emphasizes the importance of following CDC guidance.

ArborDayRVA 2022

Join the Arbor Day celebration, happening Saturday, Oct. 15th - Sunday, Oct. 23rd! We're bringing the community together at a variety of different events happening throughout the city - from tree plantings and giveaways, to educational events and tours of our green spaces. Our hope is to spread awareness of all the fantastic organizations, community groups, and City departments, whose mission is to increase and maintain our urban canopy, as well as inspire the next generation of urban and community forestry advocates.

Amelia Street School Meadow Prep

Hosted by the VCU Sustainability

Date: Sunday, October 23rd
Time: 9am-12pm & 1-4pm

Location: 1821 Amelia St, Richmond, VA 23220 (Amelia Street School)

Description:
Join VCU Sustainability in converting areas of open lawn turf into lush ecologically rich mini-meadows! We are looking for volunteers to help us take the next step in the turf-suppression process. We have been solarizing the soil under plastic sheeting all summer, and are ready to remove it to make way for multiple layers of cardboard and ultimately a 4 inch layer of mulch. This is the most effective method to kill off the Bermuda turf lawn grass, by preventing light from reaching it for 6 months. These areas will become our new “meadows”, which will be planted with native trees, shrubs, perennial grasses, and pollinator plantings. Learn about this and more tips, while helping us to prepare for our Spring 2023 Earth Day planting!

All tools will be provided, just bring water and a positive attitude! No prior experience or special skills necessary, though some lifting (max. 30lbs), bending, and stooping may be required. All activities will be located outdoors, on the grounds of Amelia Street School. Please be aware of the weather forecast, and dress accordingly (a rain-date will be communicated if we need to postpone). Restrooms will be available, volunteers may want to bring along a water bottle and snack, as well as sunscreen, if needed.

Other Information:

  • Volunteer hours will be verified within 48hrs after the end of the event, through the HandsOn Greater Richmond website
